“ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿ” ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆಯನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸುವ ಒಂದು ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ. ಇದು ಲಾಭರಹಿತ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಾದ ಉತ್ತರ ಕ್ಯಾಲಿಫೋರ್ನಿಯಾ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕೂಟದ ನೇತೃತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ೨೦೦೬ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಯಿತು.
ಹದಿಮೂರು ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ನಡೆದು ಬರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಯು ಮೊದಲು ೫೦ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗಿ ಈಗ 500 ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಮೂರು ಶಾಖೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿದೆ. ಮಿಲ್ಪಿಟಾಸ್ ನಗರದ BAYVP ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಶಾಖೆ “ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಯ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರ”ವಾಗಿದೆ. 2020 -21ರ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ವರ್ಷದಿಂದ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರವು BAYVP ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಹೊಸ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರದ “ಎಕ್ಸ್ಟೆಶನ್ ಕ್ಯಾಂಪಸ್” ಕುಪರ್ಟಿನೋದ ಹೋಮ್ಸ್ಟೆಡ್ ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲ್ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿವಹಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ಯಾನ್ ಹೊಸೆ ನಗರದ ಸಿಖ್ ಗುರುದ್ವಾರದ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಎವರ್ಗ್ರೀನ್ ಶಾಖೆಯೂ, ಉತ್ತರ ಕ್ಯಾಲಿಫೋರ್ನಿಯಾ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕೂಟ ಮತ್ತು ಟ್ರೈ ವ್ಯಾಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಂಘಗಳೆರಡೂ ಒಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದ ಟಿ. ವಿ. ಕೆ. ಎಸ್ ಶಾಖೆಯ ತರಗತಿಗಳು ಸ್ಯಾನ್ ರಮೊನ್ ನಗರದ, ಗೇಲ್ ರಾಂಚ್ ಮಿಡ್ಲ್ ಸ್ಕೂಲ್ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ.
ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿ 6 ತರಗತಿಗಳನ್ನೊಳಗೊಂಡ ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆಯನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸುವ ಪಠ್ಯಕ್ರಮವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಈ ಪಠ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಉದ್ದೇಶ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಓದುವುದು, ಬರೆಯುವುದು, ಹಾಗೂ ಮಾತೃ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುವುದನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸುವುದು. ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಸರಕಾರಿ ಶಾಲೆಯ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ವರ್ಷದಂತೆ ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ ತಿಂಗಳಿಂದ ಮೇ ತಿಂಗಳ, ಶನಿವಾರದಂದು ನಡೆಯುವ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿ, ಪೋಷಕರು ತಮಗೆ ಅನುಕೂಲವಾದ ಶಾಖೆಯನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಅನುಕೂಲವಾಗುವಂತೆ, ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಶಾಖೆಗಳ ತರಗತಿಗಳು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ವೇಳೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಮಿಲ್ಪಿಟಾಸ್ ಕೇಂದ್ರದ ತರಗತಿಗಳು ಸಂಜೆ, 4 ರಿಂದ 5:30 ರವರೆಗೆ, “ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರದ ಎಕ್ಸ್ಟೆಶನ್ ಕ್ಯಾಂಪಸ್” ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ 10:30 ರಿಂದ 12:00 ರವರೆಗೆ, ಎವರ್ಗ್ರೀನ್ ಶಾಖೆಯ ತರಗತಿಗಳು ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ, 11:00 ರಿಂದ 12:30 ರವರೆಗೆ, ಹಾಗೂ ಟಿ. ವಿ. ಕೆ. ಎಸ್ ಶಾಖೆ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ 10:00 ಗಂಟೆಯಿಂದ 11:15 ರವರೆಗೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ.
ಅಮೇರಿಕನ್ನಡ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡವನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಗೆ, ಈ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಮಾತೃಭಾಷೆ ಕನ್ನಡವಾದರೂ ವ್ಯಾವಹಾರಿಕ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲದ ಕಾರಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆಯನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸಲು ಅಗತ್ಯವಾದ ಕಲಿಕಾ ಸಾಮಗ್ರಿಯ ಕೊರತೆ ಎದ್ದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಅನುಕೂಲವಾಗುವ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಠ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಅರಿತು ಅನುಭವಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರನೇಕರು ಸೇರಿ “ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸಮಿತಿ” ಯನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಮೊದಲ ಮೂರು ತರಗತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಪಠ್ಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಮುಂದಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ತರಗತಿಗಳಿಗೂ ಪಠ್ಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸುವ ಯೋಜನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅಭಿಲಾಷೆಯನ್ನು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸಮಿತಿಯು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ.
Kannada Kali is a Kannada language teaching program, and a non-profit organization started in 2006 by Kannada Koota of Northern California.
Operating successfully for the last 14 years, Kannada Kali has grown from 50 to 500 plus students, and from one campus to three campuses over the years. The Milpitas campus is the main center for Kannada Kali and has been operating out of BAYVP temple, Milpitas. Academic year of 2020-21 onwards, the Main centre will operate out of BAYP’s new facility in San Jose, and an extension campus of its main center at Homestead high school premises in Cupertino. Two other branches are each run in Sikhv Gurudwara of Evergreen, San Jose and in Gale Ranch Middle School in San Ramon. The San Ramon Kannada Kali runs as a Joint Venture operation with Tri-Valley Kannada Koota.
Kannada Kali is a 6 grade/level proficiency program. The key objective of the program is to impart reading, writing, and spoken Kannada skills to learners. All centers have different class timings from each other to provide parents a choice between locations and timings best suited for them. Accordingly, classes are held from September to May, on Saturdays from 4:00 to 5:30 PM in Milpitas, 10:30 AM to 12:00PM on Saturdays in Main Center Extension Campus, 11:00 to 12:30 PM on Saturdays in Evergreen, and 10:00 to 11:15 AM on Saturdays in San Ramon.
Traditionally Kannada Kali has been using textbooks from Karnataka. Over the last two years, Kannada Kali “Book Committee” has prepared and released customized textbooks and workbooks for the first and second graders. The team will be making concerted efforts in the coming days to get customized books published for all grade levels of Kannada Kali.
Kannada Koota of Northern California(KKNC) has a 45 years long history. Founded in 1973, it is now the largest Kannada Association in all of North America based on the fact that up to 930 families are enrolled as members of the organization, and the organization keeps growing.
It is a non-profit with a mission to bring people together through language, culture, heritage, art and sports based activities of Karnataka (India), and engage in promoting and raising funds for charitable causes in the United States as well as in India. It conducts training sessions and workshops in language, theatre, folk arts, debating etc. through short and year long programs.
Started in 2006, Kannada kali is an initiative of KKNC, established to conduct Kannada language training activities to serve the Bay Area community. KKNC BOT oversees Executive Team and Kannada kali operations. It provides financial and other needed support that may include Seed money, legal guidance, Insurance and tax filing support for Kannada Kali to function smoothly. KKNC operates 3 Kannada language centers, under the brand name of “Kannada Kali” with about 415 plus learners in language, prose and poetry.
KKNC organizes 4 major cultural events every year coinciding with the celebration of main festivals in Karnataka. To highlight and display the rich cultural traditions originating from the state, a mix of performing arts and variety shows are offered by professional and amateur, local and visiting artists. The events are known to bring and bond people together fostering long lasting relationships within the community as well as offer opportunities to both local and visiting artists.
KKNC keeps its word mentioned in its mission statement by supporting several charitable causes like Cancer, Blind School, Disaster relief, Hospitals and Children’s health care across California and India. Overall, KKNC has grown in size and quality over the years and continues to root for Kannadigas living in the Bay Area and their culture back home.
